Can Claude read your bank accounts? Personal Finance beta access and limits

Anthropic's new Personal Finance feature can answer questions using linked bank data. Here is who can access the beta, what Claude can see, and where its answers need checking.

Anthropic announced Personal Finance in Claude on November 5, 2026. The beta lets a person link selected financial accounts and ask Claude about balances, spending, subscriptions and upcoming bills. The distinction is access: Claude can read the account data shared through Plaid, but Anthropic says it cannot move, manage or invest the money. This is an AI app feature for understanding records, not a banking transaction service.

Who can use Claude Personal Finance now?

The rollout is limited to US users on Claude Pro, Max and Ultra plans. Anthropic's Help Center says it works on Claude web, Desktop, iOS and Android, and that the gradual rollout means an eligible user may not see the option immediately. It is unavailable on Free, Team and Enterprise plans. The connected banks must be in the US. A paid plan and a US location therefore do not guarantee that a particular account can activate it today.

When the feature appears in the sidebar, the user chooses which banks and accounts to connect through Plaid. Anthropic says the bank sign-in happens through Plaid, so Claude does not request or see the bank password. Linking is a permission to read selected account data; it is worth reviewing Plaid's consent screen rather than assuming every account at a bank is included.

What financial data does Claude receive?

For chosen accounts, Anthropic lists the bank and account names, account types, the last few account-number digits, balances, credit limits and up to 24 months of transactions. Transaction details can include dates, amounts, merchants, categories and the bank's descriptions. The Help Center says investment, loan and card data are narrower than a full account record: Claude does not receive holdings, trades, rates or terms through this feature today. A user can unlink a bank to stop future reads, although prior chat replies remain until removed under the product's retention rules.

Anthropic says conversations in the Personal Finance hub are not used to train its models; information shared elsewhere in Claude follows the user's applicable privacy settings. It also warns that a shared chat or a published artifact may expose figures drawn from linked accounts. Those details matter because a useful answer can contain sensitive information even when the connection itself is read-only.

Can you rely on its spending or affordability answers?

Not without checking important numbers. Anthropic says balances can be a day or two old, unlinked banks are absent from the totals, and an account linked through two logins may be counted twice if the bank presents it differently. Claude can also make calculation or interpretation mistakes. Its own guidance is to trace a number back to the transactions and check consequential figures in the bank's app or statements. The feature is not designed to provide investment advice.

The product change is broader than a new chatbot prompt: an existing AI app is becoming a place where people bring personal records and ask for a usable view of them. For makers building software around sensitive data, the release is a concrete reminder to explain scope, consent, stale data and error handling in the product itself. VIBPS has not connected a bank or tested the beta; the access and behavior above come from Anthropic's dated announcement and current help documentation.
